Bruce Stafford, son of Dick Stafford, was a Woodbury firefighter for 22 years, retired as Chief, and was also a 35-year paramedic. On November 20, 2014, Bruce passed away suddenly. This was a uniquely difficult situation for Woodbury EMS, Police and Firefighters who responded. Seeing the first responders that night doing everything they could professionally, their shock and grief, and the caring gentleness shown to his widow, Donna Smith-Stafford, left a lasting impression on her.
To show her deepest respect and gratitude, and with guidance from Bruce and Dick, a fund was established to honor Woodbury’s Public Safety Department which is called the Woodbury Police K9 Fund. To sustain the fund and remain true to the vision and mission, the Koins for K9s program was created in 2015.
The City of Woodbury will declare the month between November 20 and December 20 each and every year be designated as Koins for K9s Month in Woodbury. This time frame has been chosen for three reasons: it begins on the day which Bruce passed away, businesses who have participated in the past wished to extend the collection period from one week to a month and it encompasses much of the holiday season. Donation boxes will be distributed throughout the community, giving an opportunity for everyone to give thanks to our police officers, canine officers, paramedic/EMTs and firefighters.
